By Anthony Attanasio
It's a sad but true: Most people these days would not be able to fix a broken appliance in their kitchen if they read the manual, researched online AND watched a home improvement television show about it.
The Dreaded Bubble Leaking - This is one of the most common reasons customers claim to need professional dishwasher repair. Most people get scared their machine will explode the minute they see that bubbles have leaked out of the sides and are now all over the kitchen floor.
But why does this happen?
More often than one would think, someone unfamiliar with a particular dishwasher will accidentally put dish soap in the dishwasher instead of dishwasher soap. While the names are very similar, these are two extremely different cleaning products. The dish soap will create a huge amount of foamy bubbles that grow so large that they expand out the dishwasher. Dish soap is meant to foam up, but dishwasher soap is meant to leave your dishes soap free by the end.
The Broken Soap Dispenser - Another common reason people claim they need a professional repair is because they think their soap dispenser is ineffective. Oftentimes, the reason behind this is that there just isn't enough soap in their machine. Maybe sometimes the dishwasher will be able to efficiently clean dishes if they are not too dirty to begin with, but for most dinner plates, soap and water is needed to clean them. When there isn't enough soap in the dishwasher, the dishes won't get clean. This is not your dishwasher's fault!
Soap aside, many people will complain that their dishes are dirty when they come out of dishwasher. A helpful and easy solution to this is that you should always scrape the excess food the pots and pans. There is no real need to actually wash the dish before you put it in the dishwasher but when you leave leftover food on your plate it can dry, get crusty and become very difficult for just a stream of hot water to remove.
If you used the right soap and the right amount of it but your dishes still aren't clean, it may be because the detergent cap is not screwed on or isn't closed properly before a cycle starts. If this is the case, your dishwasher still isn't receiving enough cleaning product. Another possible reason could be that the dishwasher is clogged. To check this, look at the inlet filter screens and fine particle filter. If these are clogged, cleaning them out might be all you need to avoid getting unnecessary professional dishwasher repair.
Dusty Looking Dishes - If your dishes are dirty with a smoky film, it may be due to an excessive calcium buildup or mineral deposit. To remove this, you need an acid. An easy solution to this is using a store-bought dishwasher cleaner that you run with your cycle. However you can also just try running your empty dishwasher with a cup full of white vinegar, or even a cup full of the powdered drink called Tang. Try doing this first, because a professional appliance repair will be much more expensive than buying a little bottle of vinegar (or a tangy drink!).
All of the tips listed above are very simple and effective ways to pull off "repairing" your dishwasher, so definitely try these first if you don't think that your machine is working properly, before you call for a professional appliance repair technician.

Dishwasher Maintenance
By SE GardenerProper dishwasher maintenance is essential in order to get the most out of the machine and extend its usable life. Maintenance should be performed regularly, with a set daily, weekly and monthly schedule. A small amount of preventative care can save long hours of work later on, as well as the expense of a repair or replacement. The manufacturer of your particular dishwasher model should have provided particular instructions for their product, but the following tips can help you to get the most out of any machine.
General Tips
• Turn off the dishwasher when it is not in use.
• Leave the door open if the dishwasher will not be used overnight. This prevents the build up of odors.
• Ensure that you do not use rinse aid if your dishwashing detergent already contains it. This can cause excess foam and may damage the machine.
• Check if your area has hard or soft water. Use a commercial water softener to prevent the build-up of limescale in areas with hard water. Limescale can clog sprayer holes and damage the machine.
Each Load of the Machine
• Remove any food scraps from the dishes and rinse lightly before loading the machine. This prevents food debris from clogging up the filters.
• Tea and coffee residue should also be discarded before the cups are placed in the dishwasher.
• Ensure that you are loading the machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. Protruding dishes can prevent the sprayer arms from rotating correctly or stop the soap dish from opening once the dishwasher is running.
• Check that the filters are not clogged. Remove the filters and tap out any food remains. Clean the filters if necessary.
• Check the levels of salt and rinse aid in their reservoirs. Top up the reservoirs if it is necessary.
Every Week
• Remove and clean the main filter to remove any food debris which has accumulated during washes. There may be another filter below the main filter. This should also be removed and cleaned. This build up of food remains can cause the growth of bacteria and prevent water from draining in the machine.
• Remove the sprayer arms and clean the water holes. Small items of food or limescale build up may block these small holes and prevent your dishwasher from cleaning at an optimal level.
• Clean the pivot around which the sprayer arms turn. Replace the sprayer arms and check that they are able to rotate smoothly.
• Wipe the interior of the dishwasher with a commercial cleaning agent. Ensure that no residue is left behind after cleaning.
Once a Month
• Check the integrity of the door seal and clean it.
• Check that there are no food or limescale deposits in any of the hoses. Clean or replace the hoses if necessary.
• Run the dishwasher on a "clean cycle" according to the manufacturer's instructions for your model. This is a cycle that is run without any dishes loaded. It is generally a hot wash that is run with a commercial limescale and detergent remover added.

Nightmare Tumble Dryer Problems Solved!
By Tommy BarrowdaleTumble dryer problems do not always require a call to the repairman. Many simple fixes can be done at home with only a moderate level of mechanical skill. At minimum, you must know how to work a screwdriver and follow basic safety instructions. Before you plan to perform any type of repair, you must know if you your tumble dryer is heated by gas or electricity.
How to Open a Tumble Dryer
Tumble dryers are fairly simple to open, but, at first, can appear intimidating. If you can open the dryer, however, you should have enough skill to do the repairs. Always disconnect the electricity before opening the dryer. To remove the top, first take out the lint trap. There are often screws in the lint trap compartment that need to be removed. Using a sturdy putty knife, insert it into the groove between the top and side panel. On some models you need only to pry the top up. Other models will have a clip that must be unlocked on the front corners with the putty knife.
To open the front, unscrew the front bottom panel. Put two blocks under the tumbler to support it, and disconnect the wires from the door. The front should lift off. This will give you access to most components of the dryer.
Nothing Works
If the dryer doesn't do anything when you turn it on, check to see that it is receiving electricity. Will anything else work from the outlet? Check the circuit breaker or fuse box for the outlet. The next thing to check is the door switch. If the door switch is faulty, it will keep the dryer from activating. The switch is easily reachable from the top or front if you need to replace it. If the dryer still doesn't work, it may be an internal fuse. A thermal fuse is usually located in the exhaust duct of the unit. If the fuse is blown, the dryer will not operate. If the fuse is intact, check the wiring from the power cord. It may not be securely attached to the terminal block.
It Tumbles, But There's No Heat
If there's no heat to your tumble dryer, check the electricity first. The dryer may have two circuits or fuses. Be sure to check both of them. Often, one is for the motor, and the other is for the heating element. If you have a gas dryer, the ignition may be out. Replacing the ignition may solve the problem. Also check to see that gas is getting to the dryer. If your dryer doesn't have an ignition, it has a pilot light. Make sure the pilot light is lit. If not, relight it.
